The decision to buy substitute drugs is undoubtedly driven by their lower price compared to the originals. The price difference is due to the difference in registration procedures, which are much simpler for drug substitutes.
What do we pay attention to when deciding to buy a drug?
According to the results of our study, when choosing a drug, we most often follow our doctor’s recommendations – 49.1% of our respondents. Almost every third of the buyers pay particular attention to the price – 27.7% of the respondents. 18.0% of them also take into consideration the pharmacist’s endorsements.
Drug substitute awareness
The largest group of respondents admitted that they have never been informed by their doctors about the possibility of buying cheaper alternatives of drugs, with identical composition and effects as the original prescription drugs. Only in the case of 3.9% of our respondents, the doctors actually gave that information.
Nearly 18% of respondents claim that the effectiveness and safety of substitutes compared to original drugs are lower.
According to the study, we also rarely ask about the possibility of acquiring cheaper counterparts. Only one in three respondents admitted that they frequently, or always, asked the pharmacist, from their own initiative, to buy a substitution drug (always – 12.2%, often – 18.7%). The largest group, which accounts for nearly half of the respondents, never asks the pharmacist about the availability of substitutes – 45.7%.
